you can take the activist out of the society but you can’t take the activist out of the activist.

Exhibit A Released 5 Years Ago Today

The amount of courage that it takes to be able to even get to the moment where you are standing in front of a microphone in the recording studio can feel insurmountable. At least it did for me. I will never forget recording this song. I really wanted for the engineer to care about what we were creating. This was not only going to be my first single but the song touches on the very sensitive topic of when my friends and former classmates died in an avalanche on a school trip. Obviously it was a large task to ask of anyone to care even remotely close to as much as I did, but I felt if he could feel my spark then perhaps we could create something electric.

Since releasing Exhibit A I have learned so much about myself as an artist and an individual. For starters, in the words of Beyonce “I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my shit.” My art is an expression of self. At the beginning I wanted for everything I put out to be “raw and real” and I definitely am still committed to everything being “real” but over the years I have become less committed to the “rawness.” I have plenty of songs that have this same energy still, but I am less enthused about the “shock and awe” approach to music. I would rather just always give it to you real, and I have learned that even I myself prefer a dose of real with a spoonful of honey (if it’s honest and available).

Bottom line is, I have grown, and you can hear the growth beginning from Exhibit A and listening all the way through my SoundCloud.

I feel joy in celebrating this milestone. Since releasing Exhibit A I have not stopped writing, recording or releasing music. I have consistently worked on my craft behind closed doors, and promoted my artistry publicly. I am proud to be the person I am today, a singer and rapper, songwriter, artist and executive producer of my own shit.
